The Michaels Companies, Inc. is an American retail holding company headquartered in Irving, Texas, and the largest arts-and-crafts specialty retailer in North America. It operates over 1,300 Michaels stores across 49 U.S. states and Canada plus Michaels.com and Michaels.ca, and also owns Artistree, a manufacturer of custom and specialty framing merchandise. Founded in 1973 by Michael J. Dupey in Dallas, it went public on NASDAQ in 2014 under the ticker MIK and was taken private by Apollo Global Management in April 2021 in a roughly $3.3 billion deal. In 2025 it acquired Joann's intellectual property and private-label brands, expanding into fabric, sewing and party supplies.
